03/12/2025
Super interesting session by Simon Devane, discussing the challenging budget for anyone running a small to medium sized business. From business rates, staff costs, pensions and EMI, we discussed ways of alleviating the impact such as software and AI.
See brief summary below:
Business Rates
- Reduction in the multiplier for retail and leisure (may impact some members)
- Reasonably significant increase in the rateable values of properties
- Important to understand net position and challenge the VOA on your ratable value if you think it is high relative to your rent
Increase in Min Wage
- 4.1%, from £25,397 to £26,437
- Increased admin costs for most businesses
- Look at areas of efficiency / outsourcing / software / AI etc
Pension Salary Sacrifice
- Employers NI for staff pension contributions via salary sacrifice
PAYE Thresholds Frozen
- Impact of fiscal drag over time, will put pressure on salaries
EMI (Enterprise Management Incentive)
- EMI schemes extended from 10 years to 15 years (used to expire after 10)
- Increased thresholds to allow bigger businesses to access (could be relevant for bigger consolidators)
